Though it may not have been easy or fun, your time in the Void was ultimately productive; you've become far stronger than you were when you entered, and you may have even made a friend(?) or two. Shadow insists on remaining behind in the Void because he does not want to interfere with this world or potentially cause problems with this world's Shadow (wherever he may be), but Infinite is free to either accompany you or stay behind and fight Shadow, depending on whatever you guys would like. Surprisingly, he'll respect your wishes without complaint (though this may be because he wants to fight Shadow).
You return to the outskirts of Chicago, and it seems that the city has changed some in your time away...
THE CITY
Eggman's chroma has taken over damn near everything. The buildings, the streets, even the wildlife. It seems that the changes have only hit the city itself, as the outskirts (where the base is located) are mostly chroma-free. Still, it's a stark change - you haven't really been gone for all that long, have you? It's kind of hard to tell judging from your time in the Void, but if you check a calendar you'll find that approximately two weeks have passed. All this in two weeks seems a bit much...
The city itself still retains the same landmarks, shops, and people - though the former two are Eggman-ified. The people are back to going about their business as lifelessly as ever, completely heedless of the robots even if they do get in the way... but even the robots are back to patrolling as usual. There are far more of them now, however, and they aren't the same ones you're used to. Sure, you can still fine drones, B33s, and tanks here and there, but they've mostly been replaced by newer, tougher foes.
You're going to have to fight if you enter the city for any reason. The robots will recognize you as a threat and try to kill you on sight, and there are far more of them now than there ever were. But you're stronger now, so you can certainly keep up, if not destroy them easily.
THE BASE
The new base that Sonic and friends have moved you all into is quite different from the last one. This one seems to have been an office building at some point; a simple two story building with plenty of large rooms and smaller offices that have been repurposed as bedrooms. You can room with the same people as before, or you can even claim your own room! There's plenty of space here, after all. Knuckles will even move beds around if you want to rearrange things and can't lift them yourself.
Unfortunately, this base isn't nearly as furnished as the previous one. Sonic Team has managed to get all the bedrooms functional in the span of a few days, but everything else? Well... You're going to have to help with that, aren't you? The kitchen is barebones, there's no rooms for entertainment, training, or anything else, and security is minimal. Tails is still working on getting his surveillance up and running, let alone all the various research he's been working on. In short, you've got your work cut out for you building this place into something you can truly call your own.
But it is located on the outskirts of Chicago and it is is safe. After all, you've got each other to rely on.
SHARDS
Shadow's test may not have immediately had any sort of effects on you, but as you return to Chicago and resume fighting, you'll realize that controlling your shard and its power is innate at this point. You won't be struggling with it anymore - in fact, you've completely unlocked your shard's power. You're capable of a great many more things with it now than you were before. You should be able to use your shard for offensive and defensive purposes - which yes, means our healers can do the equivalent of averaging their HP with the enemy in order to deal damage to them. Fun times all around. You'll find that bonding with another shardbearer is also easier, and you can bond with many more of them now. You're growing stronger; maybe your time away in the Void did some good after all.
As you fight with your allies - particularly those you have a close bond with, positive or negative - you may feel the tug of something in the back of your head; it tells you that you can do more. Together, you can become more powerful. You can use your shards together. Doing so will grant you a new power, or strengthen the one you already have. The more you trust one another, the easier this power will be to use.
It might be good to experiment with these new powers; after all, you never know when you may need them.
TAILS' TASKS
Returning to the old base is ill-advised, but you can take a ring and hop over there if you've got someone to accompany you. After all, Tails would appreciate more of his old gear back, and you've probably left things behind there too. You'll find that the place is simply swarming with robots - they're on patrol rather than smashing your things, almost as if they were waiting for you all to return. Bring back whatever you need or whatever will prove useful - and be careful about it.
Of course, rings are running low again... so you know what that means. Scour Chicago and the outskirts in search of those pesky rings and make sure to bring them back! As always, they'll be found in increasingly bizarre and frustrating locations, but you'll be able to find them easier now than you could before. You won't even need a radar - your shards will innately draw you toward their location now!
ENEMIES
While you're undoubtedly going to find yourself running into familiar bots from the previous weeks, there are many new ones to contend with - and they are far stronger than the others. Eggman's army has more or less taken over Chicago, meaning that you'll be running into some sort of enemy frequently. The outskirts of the city are practically deserted, with the exception of your old base, that is.
Assault Drones have more or less replaced the majority of weaker patrolling drones. Unlike those, these are built for combat and they will not hesitate to engage in it. Capable of both shooting lasers, exploding, and sending out a loud siren call for reinforcements, they are not fun to fight. Still, they're the weakest of the new enemies by a long shot... though if you aren't quick enough and they get that loud siren out, they're going to be joined by those stronger enemies.
E-1000s are robots with gun arms that want you dead. They're capable of limited flight, shooting many lasers, and are quite durable... and to make matters worse, some of them even have shards allowing them access to a knockoff copy of one of your powers. The E-1000s usually patrol solo, without any other robots for backup, but they can and will call in reinforcements of the previous weeks' smaller robots when necessary.
Shadow Androids are basically what you'd expect. Shadow androids. They not only look like a certain black and red hedgehog, they also act like him, moving quickly and striking with hard hits and utilizing their fake Chaos Emerald shards for Chaos Control to both warp and temporarily freeze any opponent they face. They usually patrol in pairs - two Shadow Androids or a Shadow Android and any other assortment of weaker robots. Chaos Control is far more useful when someone else can take advantage of it, after all!
Before The Advance Of The Grand Robot [ More is around the base pretty much all the time! Aside from a (handwaved) short trip to the old base to go grab his stuff, he's not risking injury by going out to confront the robots. You might ask him to heal you though, if you are among the brave and return injured. Healing comes with a beautiful little short story about your bravery, so that's... a perk? Maybe?
Otherwise, More can be seen writing in a small notebook a lot. It's neither sketches nor a story this time, but instead a wide variety of charts - some of them document everyone's combat powers, while others appear to be pro- and con lists for various worlds...?
And finally, More can be found in the front area of the showers, wrapped in a (black) bathrobe and staring forlornly at a near-empty bottle of conditioner... ]
And just as I was getting used to this convenience, too...
During The Advance Of The Grand Robot [ Once the robot starts moving, More spends an absolutely disproportionate time in front of the window... talking to himself. ]
... at the beck and call of his master, the giant advances in a confident stride. His steps show no hurry, for he is confident in his power and believes his enemies will fall before him in new time. Each step carries him only a few meters, but the pace of his march is relentless and merciless. The combat robot is heedless of the vegetation he crushes under his feet. Spring's first flowers meet a sudden end and animals, in their clouded state of mind, only narrowly evade the certain demise such a weighty footstep would bring them...
[ He'll just keep going like this. The good news is that More truly has a very nice voice! This whole spiel very much sounds like a professionally recorded audio-book! Maybe you'll want to interrupt him, or maybe you just want to sit down and listen...?
By the next day though, More has thoroughly run out of things to say about a robot advancing in a straight line. He sounds significantly more exasperated and his narration has devolved to something more like this: ]
... during the relentless march, the joints of the robot move with grease that was produced by craftsmen and -women who specialize in working with machinery. Their lives have been taken over by Eggman, the same way as the lives of the screw-maker and welders and leather-workers have been before them. They produced the motor oil without any specific passion for their craft, merely going through the motions, before returning home to their families that they no longer appear to have any particular feelings about...
[ Or this: ]
... though the combat robot would not think to spare a single thought to it, the dandelion it is passing has a quite specific growth process during which the flowers eventually transform into...
[ Please help him, he's getting hoarse... ]
Closed to Turo [ Everything that happened at the night of the party feels like a strange fever dream to More, and not just because he was tipsy through the whole ordeal. Even a good day later, it feels hard to believe that they actually made a commitment to travel together. In light of this delightfully surreal development, it had only made sense to room together in the new base. Before long, they'd be sharing campsites instead. It seemed to make sense to get used to the proximity. (A part of More still thinks this will give Turo room to change his mind, but a much larger and significantly more sane part of him knows that he won't.) And besides, moving in together allows everyone else more space to hoard supplies in.
Indeed, moving two beds to one space was the entirely logical choice to make!!
What More forgot to account for were his own absolutely atrocious sleeping habits. Today, he's managed to come to the room at a normal time of the evening out of a sense of propriety, and he'd even gone so far as to say he'd only write for a little moment before turning off the light...
... but four hours have passed since, and his pen is still moving over paper. He has not moved from his spot at all, and has no idea what time it is. ]
[Turo had decided to wait for sleep until More went to bed himself. It hasn't been anywhere near long enough for him to actually be tired, or whatever passed for tiredness in him, so it's no trouble to lay on his bed and...stare...at the ceiling for four hours? Whatever he's doing, he seems perfectly content with it, hands folded loosely over his stomach and gaze focused on nothing in particular.
He does have an internal chronometer, however. He'll notice that passage of time.]
It's quite late, you know. You ought to consider getting some sleep.
[ Though More understands that Turo does not sleep the same way humans do, he does not actually have any idea what the sleep mode in him looks like, so he's honestly just assuming that Turo is shut down rather than just... being unmoving... for all this time...
Not that he has much of a clue how much time it is.
It takes him a second to emerge from whatever line of thought he'd currently been engaged in, and look up confused. ]
[He blinks, focusing first on the ceiling before turning his head to look at More.]
It has been roughly four hours. I'm not sure if it is quite the same for you, but adult humans ought to have at least seven hours for optimal health outcomes.
Curiously enough, yes. I found out... the hard way.
[ In his first week he forgot to eat and sleep even more than he does now. And may have completely passed out once. ]
I had initially assumed that I was a regular person trapped in a supernatural prison, so this did not surprise me. It was the out-of-time properties of Akademeia that caused my needs to be frozen, after all.
Now... well, now that I know I am created from magic whole-cloth, it's a little more baffling.
Perhaps it is only because you believed yourself to be a regular person, who was now no longer existing outside of time?
[Turo has no idea how magic works! But that's sort of the idea, right - things responding to a person's thoughts rather than the normal rules of reality?]
A subconscious effect...? Even though I forgot to sleep or eat because I was no longer used to performing these tasks regularly, my mind still knew how being a person ought to work...?
[ Maybe he shouldn't be referring to eating and sleeping as 'tasks' but that does not occur to him. ]
That might be true. Do you suppose this might change, now that I know what I am?
[ They just so happen to catch More listing out those charts for various respects, and fortunately (or unfortunately) Void Archives just so happens to be nosy as well. So as usual they don't bother to pretend they saw nothing written by the local Legendary Poet; and really, they don't think they're witnessing something far too private or anything. ]
...Hm? What's this?
I understand the potential positives behind writing out combat abilities and the like...but what has you making note of the various worlds out there?
[ Also can be for various practical reasons, but... ]
[ More certainly does not mind Void Archives' shamelessness in peeking over his shoulder. Maybe he shouldn't constantly keep rewarding their insolence, but really he's just glad to see and chat with them. ]
Oh, that... It is of no immediate relevance at all, and really I am getting quite ahead of myself... but I have begun weighing options for what comes after our duties here are fulfilled.
[ Thanks for encouraging this type of terrible behavior. This is why they manage to get along well... ]
Ah, looking forward to the future, then!
Well, considering the way events have been progressing - at quite the quick pace, mind you - I don't think it's unwarranted to start planning ahead.
Victory is well within our grasp, and soon enough, we shall all be hardly thinking much about this place and where to be in the first place. Would you not say instead that it is merely a natural course of action for one to take? To consider?
[ Though...they imagine it must be novel. More was someone who was entrapped within that library, and now is able to think of a future of his own. They wonder how long he imagined it, if he could at such a time. ]
[ That's more optimism than More feels about their odds fighting Eggman, but he does agree that it's pointless to think about an outcome in which they do not win. On a good day, he thinks that optimism and a future to look forward to are motivators that will help them give their all in the battles ahead. On a bad day, he just feels shame for daring to imagine anything at all.
Today is one of the better days. ]
Natural, perhaps. But it does feel... a little daring, no?
[ Though now that he's thinking about it... ]
Will you return to your own version of Earth, or will you take your chance to slip away?
[ Void Archives being somehow the optimist here...
Well, admittedly, as logical of a being that they have tried to insist that they are, their unnaturally high confidence has them looking on the bright side of matters. At times; there are small exceptions to that. But, none of them apply here. ]
I don't believe that there is anything wrong with being daring. For people like us, who have much to gain for reaching out for what we desire most with all that confidence...it is imperative. Especially when chasing something that is uniquely ours after having certain limiting experiences. But also, it is in general something that gives you an undeniable edge.
If anyone tells you otherwise, please do feel free to call them an imbecile. Being so direct can be quite freeing to those who can't possibly understand.
[ Void Archives phrases that lightly...though maybe More might not want to follow their advice, considering how much friction they still cause on a daily basis. ]
As for the topic of my return, I have to say that at this time I have no intentions of hurrying back to Earth. Before I arrived here, I was in another universe that was separate from my world's, and recently had been rescued after becoming stranded with a friend of mine. I intend to at least return for a moment to tell him my plans for travelling, and then leave.
Being able to travel to somewhere different, wherever that may be, will also assist in serving one of my goals. Nevermind the fact I had always held an interest in some exploration.
Anymore specifics may be dependent on multitude of other factors...I'm sure you understand, yes?
[ As, well, the 'where' is truly up in the air after the little visit - well, they have ways to stay in contact as well in case that friend needs sudden assistance, but they are still more or less figuring the actual destination (plural or not.) That's because of whatever is happening with themselves and Jasper, which they're still kind of figuring out as they go. ]
[ Void Archives goes on their long spiel of encouragement for being daring, and More feels impossible warm inside. It really feels like they took 'you are great at cheering me up' to heart and now delight in fulfilling that role even more brilliantly - and More loves them for it dearly. Other people might make him feel sorry for being a burden, but Void Archives is always so boisterous that it is hard to feel like he can truly weigh them down.
And speaking of not being weighed down, More is glad to hear they are not planning on returning either. Whatever the 'sky people' actually are, Void Archives will slip out of their grasp forever.
The last comment gets a knowing smile. ]
I understand quite well.
[ He had eyes to see VA and Jasper all over each other at the party!! ]
After all, I had been in such a state of uncertainty for a majority of our time here. Without it resolved, I had not dared to think to the future in more concrete terms at all. Now, I can begin to dream a little.
[ They believe that ultimately it is warranted - that it is well-deserved, and that More should embody such things with a readiness that he may have not experienced before. Though, it helps that Void Archives connected to him well, not having anticipated that anyone would understand the way they did about isolation and confinement.
They also can't pretend that More hasn't become one of the closer people here to them - a list that is still relatively small, considering who they are. Seeing him cheered up only makes them encouraged to never give up on the opportunity. ]
Well, I hope we didn't distract you too much. Though, there was a lot going on...I do hope you also managed to enjoy the party to the end.
[ Because they did wonder for a bit...considering. That being said, they also do happen to throw something like an amused look. ]
I do understand the lingering uncertainty, considering your circumstances before your arrival. But, also, I would have thought you would have said that you were going to dream big? Like so?
[ They spread their hands out needlessly in a large manner as they jest lightly. ]
[ That makes More laugh outright, a sound that he first seeks to stifle almost on instinct and then lets flow instead. Laughing with a friend is such a simple pleasure, and for so long it had felt unthinkable to him. ]
When it comes to casting off humility, I may still have a little to learn from you.
[ But maybe he should. Void Archives is so unabashedly in love with the life and freedom they've been granted, and it's inspiring to watch. ]
My dreams are certainly increasing in size. Despite some... ahem, incredible awkwardness thanks to tipsy carelessness, I did come out of the party with a more concrete plan for the future than before. He and I will go on a journey together.
[ Not naming Turo since he's resolved to not use that false name for him, but he figures it's obvious who he's talking about anyhow. ]
[ There we go - personally, Void Archives believes that laughs were a natural thing that should be. And yes, at times they are causing the opposite of those, but in this case, they'd rather not be. ]
If you wish to take quite a few more tips, then I would happily provide you some~
[ They say with the air of someone who would happily teach someone something important - though, tips for 'casting off humility' maybe ought not to be adopted so readily. ]
As they should be!
That being said, it sounds like everything worked out for the better. Do be certain that I am glad to hear it. Making plans for the future is not always so easy - particularly when they involve others.
But, this also does shed further light on what I saw. Fortunately, travel should provide quite the deluge of exciting experiences...
[ ...And yes, it is very obvious, to the point they see no point in questioning the 'who'. Void Archives does so happen to have had eyes at the party as well - they were a little concerned about the vibes for a bit but it did seem to pick up, so...you know. ]
[ There's still some game in there - definitely quite a bit judging by the reactions he got...even considering...all of that... ]
It'll be hard to forget what you said. You must know that as an archive of knowledge, it will be stored within my databanks forever.
You were also so earnest, so do recognize that I don't believe what you said was terrible. I have heard far worse from those under the influence. [ They thought it was thoughtful and everything! ] Though, do understand I have at the least no intentions of repeating such words anywhere or other such nonsense.
After all, while I did have my concerns, it would be quite terrible of me to be that level of careless.
[ It'd be another story entirely if More were a stranger. ]

I do understand the lingering uncertainty, considering your circumstances before your arrival. But, also, I would have thought you would have said that you were going to dream big? Like so?
[ They spread their hands out needlessly in a large manner as they jest lightly.

Yes, we... I think I would prefer to never think again of some of the things I said when under the influence of my drinks.
[ He used to have game!! What happened to that!!! ]
So if you overheard any of it, I would be much obliged if you could forget it as well.

Then I thank you for your consideration...
[ ANYWAY. Let's MOVE ON. ]
Meanwhile, I believe congratulations are in order as your own romantic adventures appear to have been much more successful?
