You hop through the ring portals, barely escaping Eggman's forces and making it through (mostly) unscathed. On the plus side, you're all here - in fact, you'll find Tails and Vakama nearby, with the fox having brought your pal here too.
But unfortunately, "here" is not exactly the best place to be.
"Back here again...? Sheesh, I really can't catch a break.
"What is this place, Sonic?"
"This is the space between worlds. The void, I guess you could call it."
Everywhere you look there's a whole lot of nothing. Gemstone-like shards litter this reality in all sorts of shapes and sizes, serving as obstacles or platforms; they're sturdy enough to walk and stand on, but this world's rules are a little different from what you're used to. For one, gravity doesn't really work properly - you may find yourself floating or walking upside-down on a shard you didn't mean to end up on, and it's going to take some getting used to.
There's not really much to do or see here either - at least, not for now. You're welcome to explore this strange place, but you won't find anything particularly interesting... with one notable exception as seen in the comment below.
No matter where you go, no matter what you do, you'll feel like you're being watched.
I'm just glad to see it running so smoothly under operation. [Yay accessibility innovation but also: let him geek out a little in general it's better than focusing on his splitting headache.] Did you have a prototype to test, or is this the same one you've been working on since I saw you last?
... Ah! Right, you wouldn't know. In my world, Sonic the Hedgehog is a very popular video game series. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Dr Robotnik are all characters in it, among others.
He plops down heavily next to her, idk I assume we are next to a wall of some nature so let's just let our weight go dead against that for a bit.]
Thanks in no small part to all of you. [He would hold out a fist for her to bump, but that can wait. He is tired. She is tired. They can just talk for now.]
Given what shape you were in when I woke, I was frightened for what had happened. Did Eggman do this to you?
I suppose none of us know that, then. But it seems as if we at least have some time to decide. I am sure that they could send you to wherever you cared to go.
[Obviously they can't just leave an entire person stranded in the void, so!]
[A nod of understanding. Experimentation outside of the norms meant for things to break in ones hands more often than not. Vakama knows he had been incredibly lucky with the Vahi working at all with only one shot at its creation.]
So it goes with exploring the unknown. I'm relieved it worked out, my friend, even if it was a risky choice to make.
It's a shame we can't continue to improve on them for the time being, but... I'll assume this has been an ideal place to test some of its limits without interruption?
[ wolfwood has no idea what kind of lightbulb went off in viktor's head but he's glad that something seemed to click for him. ]
I'd say that if yer spendin' time workin' on the process then it sounds like yer doin' something to earn it. [ a shrug. ] Personally, though, I don't think there's anythin' wrong with a little bit of selfishness.
Denyin' yerself of things just because you feel like ya haven't earned it is a fast way to give yerself a complex.
Oh! That's really cool! I was a lab assistant for half a semester in college before my professor told me I "wasn't cut out for it" and so I had to stop. What sort of lab work are you helping with?
I do not necessarily know about you- [except for the whole talk about a wasteland desert planet, but it's rude to just Assume things] but I have never had much to begin with. Even so, desiring things for myself seemed...wrong, somehow. s though tht effort could be better focused on other things.
I will have you know, this went almost without incident. The fact that I failed to apply the brakes at one point was completely intentional on my part, no matter what Ashley or the others may tell you.
I mean, certain theories in quantum mechanics would suggest there's an infinite number of possible universes in existence, so that may as well happen. Who knows, you and I could be fictional characters in a different universe!
In my experience. [ to viktor's credit, wolfwood has not been forthcoming in the slightest about himself other than the small details he has already divulged. ] Ya sound a bit like a guy I know.
[ if there's a slight fondness in the way that wolfwood speaks to this person then there's also a slight bittersweetness to it as well. ]
He has a hard time thinkin' he deserves anythin' for himself and would rather give everythin' up to others. A hardship to him is nothin' compared to the hardship of another.
I would not say I am that selfless; all systems have limits. There have been a number of things I considered painfully unfair, but on the rare occasions I dared to want something more...eh. [A vague gesture of a cybernetic hand.] It's never gone well.
This person you speak of, I presume, is a little more steadfast in their care for others.
[ wolfwood makes note of the cybernetics and can only assume the everything that went down to go from a fleshy person to something less fleshy. still, he's glad that it hasn't stopped viktor from wanting things. ]
Doesn't mean that ya shouldn't stop yerself from wantin' things.
[ ...and a sigh. ]
Yeah, he is. Even if people aren't grateful for what he's done for them or take simply take full advantage of him—it doesn't change his behavior. He'll just keep walkin' forward with a smile on his face.
